ANGOLA, Ind. (AP): The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld the drunken driving conviction of Olympic volleyball gold medalist Lloy Ball.

The Herald-Republican reports that Ball, a member of the U.S. team in the 2008 Summer Olympics, had argued the Steuben Circuit Court abused its discretion during a trial last year when he was convicted of misdemeanor operating while intoxicated in a manner that endangers a person. He had argued that there was no legal basis for him being stopped in June 2011.

He was arrested after a state police officer said he was driving 49 mph in a 40 mph zone and driving left of center. Court documents indicate his blood-alcohol content was 0.13 percent. The legal limit in Indiana is 0.8 percent.

Ball was given a one-year suspended sentence and placed on probation.
