CARMEL, Ind. (AP) _ A proposal to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity has been tabled by city officials in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel. 

The Indianapolis Star reports that Carmel finance committee chairwoman Luci Snyder tabled the ordinance Thursday. Snyder said no one in Carmel is in favor of discrimination but the ordinance could leave the city open to lawsuits. She said she would work with city legal staff to address issues.

City Council President Rick Sharp said he would lift the ordinance from the committee and plan a vote on the measure at the Monday council meeting if members were prepared to pass it.

The moves came after Advance America Executive Director Eric Miller spoke during the Thursday meeting, saying the ordinance raised legal questions and concerns.
