SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be among the speakers at a tribute to the late Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who was president of Notre Dame for 35 years.

Hesburgh's funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday and there is a tribute Wednesday night.

Hesburgh was known for championing civil rights and diplomacy around the globe as he built Notre Dame into an academic powerhouse. He retired in 1987 and died Thursday at age 97.

A steady stream of mourners passed through the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus Tuesday during Hesburgh's wake.

Gov. Mike Pence has ordered flags at state facilities across Indiana to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Wednesday to honor Hesburgh.
