City Looking For Local Storm Cleanup Funds

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Mayor of Fort Wayne was rebuffed Tuesday night in an effort to recoup money for repairs following recent storms.

Mayor Tom Henry argues that Allen County Solid Waste Management should contribute money for cleanup efforts. In a heated Tuesday discussion, city officials requested $250,000 from a rainy day fund.

County Commissioner Nelson Peters wants the city to wait until the federal government reviews the stat's FEMA application, and says if they did contribute that it could go against any aid that would be coming their way.

The Allen County Solid Waste District took the action Tuesday. District Executive Director Tony Burrus says district policy requires a county state of emergency to be declared before distributing money for cleanup costs from a rainy day, but the county commissioners never made such a declaration.

Both Henry and Peters are on the board of directors for the Solid Waste Management District.
