GARY, Ind. (WOWO) – The City of Gary has formally entered the race to become the new home of the Chicago Bears, unveiling a detailed proposal Friday as the NFL franchise expands its stadium search into northwest Indiana.
City leaders say the introduction of Indiana Senate Bill 27, which would create a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority to help finance a stadium, significantly strengthens the state’s bid.
Gary’s plan highlights three “plug-and-play” stadium sites: the Gary West End Entertainment District near Hard Rock Casino, Buffington Harbor, and Miller Beach.
Mayor Eddie Melton says Gary’s proximity to Chicago, transportation infrastructure, and waterfront views make it uniquely positioned.
He confirmed conversations with Bears leadership and emphasized the project’s potential to drive long-term economic growth across northwest Indiana.
