Critics Call for Greater Oversight of Data Center Development Deals

LANSING, MI (WOWO) Public concern over the expansion of hyperscale data centers in Michigan intensified during a crowded legislative hearing in Lansing, where residents called for increased transparency and stronger oversight of development projects.

The hearing before the Michigan House Oversight Subcommittee on Corporate Subsidies and State Investments drew an overflow audience, with most speakers opposing current policies governing large-scale computing facilities, according to Bridge Michigan reporting.

Residents raised concerns about the impact of data centers on farmland, water resources, and environmental conditions, arguing that project-by-project reviews do not fully capture cumulative effects on local infrastructure and natural resources.

Some speakers also criticized the use of non-disclosure agreements in negotiations between developers and local governments, saying the agreements limit public access to information about proposed projects.

Lawmakers say interest in data center development has increased following state-level tax incentives designed to attract large technology investments, with proposals now under consideration in multiple communities across Michigan.

Officials say at least one project has already received approval, while several others remain in various stages of review.

The hearing reflects ongoing debate over how Michigan should balance economic development incentives with environmental concerns and public oversight as demand for large-scale data infrastructure continues to grow.
