GOSHEN, Ind. (AP): The death of an experienced cyclist has spurred Elkhart County officials to step up efforts to install warning signs for motorists along country roads that cross a popular trail.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dale Ewers of Goshen died Sept. 10 from injuries suffered when he crossed the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Investigators suggest Ewers failed to stop for a stop sign on the path before crossing the roadway.

Some residents say they would like to see warning signs for motorists, lower speed limits and marked cross walks where the trail intersects with county roads.

Elkhart County officials won't go that far but say they've redoubled their efforts to install signs since Ewers' accident.
