FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Dangerous heat is expected to grip Fort Wayne and the surrounding Tri-State region over the next two days, with heat index values forecast to reach the upper 90s and potentially exceed 100 degrees during the afternoon hours.
According to local weather forecasts, the combination of high temperatures and humidity will create hazardous conditions, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses for people spending extended time outdoors.
Health officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and check on elderly neighbors, young children and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat. Pet owners are also encouraged to ensure animals have access to shade and plenty of water.
Cooling centers are open in Fort Wayne to provide relief from the heat. Residents can call 3-1-1 or visit the city’s website for locations and operating hours.
Forecasters expect the hottest conditions to occur during the afternoon and early evening hours before temperatures gradually ease later in the week. Officials recommend wearing lightweight clothing, taking frequent breaks if working outdoors and never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.
