Defiance County Courthouse to get long-awaited makeover

DEFIANCE, Ohio (AP): County officials have awarded a $1.5 million contract to renovate the exterior of a nearly 150-year-old courthouse in northwestern Ohio.

The (Toledo) Blade reports that the Defiance County Courthouse is set to have a third-floor parapet replaced with a mansard roof. Plans also call for some window replacements and the addition of a cupola roof to a west entry tower.

Voters rejected a 2006 plan to demolish the courthouse, and a committee was created to decide on its future plans.

County officials say the committee rejected a 2013 plan to renovate the courthouse’s interior and exterior, ultimately deciding that interior improvements would be handled by maintenance staff.

Midwest Contracting of Holland won the bid with its December proposal. The project is expected to be finished by Sept. 30.
