Divers Find Body of Missing Central Indiana Canoeist

GENEVA, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities say they've recovered the body of a missing canoeist in central Indiana.

State Police and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department say divers located the body of James Hellums of Shelby County on Tuesday afternoon in the Flatrock River about 25 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Police say Hellums was last seen Jan. 4 with his white pit bull. Witnesses reported seeing a man hanging onto the side of an overturned canoe, and the dog was found later that day. Hellums' family filed a missing persons report following the disappearance.
