FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — A family dog is being blamed for accidentally starting a fire Tuesday morning at a home on Fort Wayne’s northwest side.
Firefighters with the Fort Wayne Fire Department were dispatched to the 6200 block of Walnut Valley Drive at 10:42 a.m. and arrived on scene four minutes later. The first engine company found light smoke coming from the eaves of a one-story residence and forced entry into the home to investigate.
As firefighters entered, a dog inside the house escaped through the open door. Crews quickly located a fire in the kitchen and extinguished it before it could spread further throughout the home.
Additional firefighters conducted a thorough search of the residence for any occupants or other pets, but no one was found inside. Officials said no one was home at the time of the fire.
Investigators determined the fire started when the dog accidentally turned on a stovetop burner, igniting items that had been left on the stove.
The home sustained moderate fire, smoke and water damage. Firefighters had the blaze under control in around 20 minutes.
Officials also noted that the home was equipped with a working smoke detector. No injuries were reported.
