INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ An annual campaign that collects used cellphones to benefit Indiana's domestic violence victims has rounded up more than 1,300 of the devices.

The HopeLine from Verizon initiative collects unused cellphones and accessories to refurbish and sell. Those proceeds are then used to buy new cellphones equipped with 3,000 anytime minutes that domestic violence survivors receive through participating agencies.

Some of the money is also used for grants to agencies that help domestic violence survivors.

Indiana First Lady Karen Pence calls the HopeLine initiative an “incredible program'' that helps domestic violence survivors around the state. She says last year's inaugural drive collected 1,200 donated cellphones.
