Downtown Muncie Train Quiet Zone Nearly Finished

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ A quiet-zone project aimed at lessening the noise from train horns in downtown Muncie is nearly finished.

Earlier this year the city approved about $3.5 million in construction contracts with Norfolk and Southern Railway and CSX to establish the quiet zone. City Street Department Superintendent Duke Campbell tells the Muncie Star Press that the project will be done by the end of this week.

The contracts paid for improvements to several crossings and changes in the city's traffic flow to make it less necessary for trains to blow horns downtown. The work included signs at crossings saying “No Train Horn.''

The city earmarked $5 million for the quiet zone work as part of a larger package that includes a hotel and 400-space parking garage.
