Drive-by shooting at a local church leaves one woman injured

(WOWO News)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Around 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening, The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to reports of an injured woman at the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church on the corner of East Creighton Avenue and Oliver Street, according to the Journal Gazette.  The woman injured was attending a baby shower at the church and was sitting in the third pew when she was struck in the arm by a bullet.  According to witnesses, everyone seemed to think a balloon popped at the shower until the woman cried out.  She was taken to the hospital and said to be in fair condition.

The police suspect it was a drive-by shooting and stated that the shots came from the south.  A perimeter was set up half a block away at a used car dealership on Oliver Street.  Detectives found shell casings as police checked the area.  It was noticed  that the church’s back door facing Oliver Street was hanging open. A man at the shower indicated that there were four guys running away from the scene and pointed in the direction of where the shell casings were found and described them as “random shots.” According to the pregnant woman who was having the shower, she isn’t with the father of the baby anymore, but there isn’t any animosity between them either.  She indicated that if someone was trying to send her a message, she didn’t know what it was.

There have been no arrests made at this time.  This case remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department.  If you have any information on this shooting, please contact Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.
