Easing voter fraud woes

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A big topic of conversation in Indiana is the recent altercations of voter registrations, which some are thinking might be possible cases of voter fraud.

However, WOWO News talked to Andy Downs, from the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics, and he says the real question is, when does something become voter fraud verses when is something just a technical error?

“I think what we are probably looking at is sloppiness on the part of those who are running voter registration drives,” Downs said. “I think there might be an error or two by people who are typing things into the system, whether that is an individual voter or someone else and then yeah who knows, maybe there are a couple of people who have tried to defraud the system.”

There has been more activity in this year’s voting compared to previous election years, but Downs says that “activity” does not necessarily mean voter fraud.

“…even if people managed to fraudulently vote 1,000 times in Indiana, that is still not going to affect the outcome of a statewide election… even a close one,” Downs said. “For example in 2008, Obama won by 28,000 votes. The scale you have to get to affect a statewide race, is very large and very unlikely to pull off.”

If Hoosiers are still concerned about their registration, voters can check their current registration status online at Indianavoters.com.
