EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Evansville will ask lawmakers for more local authority to restrict private fireworks displays.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/1tNAPyh ) that council members consulted the city attorney after receiving numerous complaints during the July 4 period.

State law states that fireworks must be permitted on 12 days of each year, and local municipalities may not approve any limits. City officials want more local control and believe other communities also would like it. They'll consider a resolution to that effect Monday.

Republican Sen. Vanesa Becker of Evansville urged the city to pass the resolution and seek assistance from lobbyists to get lawmakers' attention.

Becker says she agrees local governments should have some say in fireworks regulation because they're the ones who receive complaints.
