FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The drinking water is safe, but your home’s paint might not be.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health held a media briefing Friday to assure the public that, unlike the situation in Flint, Michigan, the area’s drinking water is safe from lead contamination. The bigger problem, they say, is lead paint.

Our news partners at 21Alive report that around 95,000 Allen County homes were built before federal rules banning lead-based paint were passed in the 1970s, and many of those homes still standing have the toxic mixture on their walls.

When the paint gets old, it can crack, crumble into dust, and be inhaled, thus poisoning whoever breathes it in, and children are especially at risk. You can find out how to prevent lead poisoning here.
