FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — Mayor Sharon Tucker announced Monday a leadership change in the Fort Wayne Police Department, with Police Chief Scott Caudill stepping down effective immediately. Deputy Chief P.J. Smith has assumed the role of police chief and was sworn in earlier in the day.
Mayor Tucker thanked Caudill for his service and expressed confidence in Smith’s leadership moving forward.
“I want to wish Scott the very best. I’m appreciative of his time and dedication in overseeing our department,” said Mayor Tucker. “Moving forward, I’m grateful for P.J. and his commitment to taking on a new role in leading our department. I trust and value his professionalism and experience. He will do a great job leading the women and men of the FWPD.”
Smith joined the Fort Wayne Police Department in 1983 and has served in several leadership roles, including sergeant, captain, and deputy chief. His experience also includes assignments with the Emergency Services Team and the Metro Squad. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in applied management from Trine University.
“I look forward to humbly serving the citizens of our community and the officers of the Fort Wayne Police Department as we move forward together,” Smith said.
City officials said Fort Wayne remains a safe community and emphasized that public safety efforts will continue under the department’s new leadership.
