FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Fort Wayne Police Department detective is facing trafficking charges.

Robert Kirby is facing trafficking with an inmate outside a facility and official misconduct charges, according to our Partners in News at ABC 21. Court documents reveal Kirby is accused of helping drop a bag of tobacco where inmates were working between September 2-4.

Investigators say the bag drop, which contained 28 bags of loose tobacco, 12 mini lighters, 10 packs of rolling papers and a pack of electrical tape, was at the Jefferson County Proving Grounds. An offender at the Madison Correctional Facility told officials Kirby was her boyfriend.

Kirby has worked for the department since January 1987, and has served as a detective in vice and narcotics since October 2002.

He is currently on paid administrative leave.
