INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Fundraising totals are being reported in the Republican primary to succeed senior Indiana Sen. Dan Coats, who is retiring after 2016.
Current U.S. Rep. Todd Young leads the pack, banking $720,000 in the third quarter alone.
But political observers say money alone will not secure the nomination for Young. Fellow U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, whose campaign was roiled in turmoil after key staffers recently stepped down, came in second, raising $618,000.
Former state GOP Chairman Eric Holcomb came in third, raising just $110,000. His campaign says despite the low figure, Holcomb has an advantage because he continuously travels the state to meet voters and local party leaders. His rivals, meanwhile, are regularly in Washington, D.C., when Congress meets.
