INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Republican leaders are having a hard time finding a candidate to challenge the current Democratic state schools superintendent in Indiana.
Some political experts tell The Indianapolis Star that they haven't even heard any mentions of potential candidates who could vie for Glenda Ritz's post in 2016. Andy Downs of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at IPFW says it would be difficult to find someone who has enough money to overcome Ritz's name recognition.
Ritz also is backed by the state's teachers union and its politically active members. They largely are credited with helping Ritz defeat Republican school superintendent Tony Bennett in 2012.
The president of the Indiana State Teachers Association says the union is expected to support Ritz for re-election, but it's still in the process of formally endorsing a candidate.
