HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) _ The owners of a northwestern Indiana weight loss clinic have pleaded guilty to federal charges of tax evasion and illegally dispensing millions of pills to patients without proper examinations.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dr. Rakesh Anand of Tinley Park, Ill. and his wife, 53-year-old Meena Anand, also agreed to forfeit $5.2 million to the federal government under the plea agreement Monday in U.S. District Court in Hammond.

The Times of Munster reports the couple owned and managed Doctors Weight Loss Clinics in Merrillville, Tinley Park and Orland Park, Ill.

Rakesh Anand admitted he and Dr. Dinesh Saraiya purchased and dispensed more than 4 million amphetamine-based pills that are controlled substances.

The Anands remain free on bond until sentencing. Saraiya also awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.
