Hammond Schools Weigh Video, Audio Recordings

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — Hammond school officials are considering installing audio and video monitors on school buses and allowing security officers to wear monitoring equipment while on duty.

The proposal before the Board of Trustees for the School City of Hammond says administrators would have to notify people that audio monitoring was occurring and allow them to opt out.

Superintendent Walter Watkins tells The Times that the proposal stems from “the tenor of what's happening in society” rather than a particular incident in the district.

School Board member Cindy Murphy objects to using audio devices and questions how recordings would be used.

The district is working with Ohio-based NEOLA Inc. to review the policy to ensure it conforms to state law.
