Hoosier Lawmaker Pushing to Allow Local Governments to File Bankruptcy

VALPARASIO, Ind. (WOWO): An Indiana lawmaker is pushing a proposal that would allow local governments to file for bankruptcy. If Detroit can do it, Hoosier cities should be allowed to, as well. That, from Republican Senator Ed Charbonneau of Valparaiso, who says he will introduce a measure that would make bankruptcy an option for distressed municipalities.

Charbonneau says the Motor City's bankruptcy filing shows such cases are possibilities and that it's important to have measures in place. Indiana is one of nearly two dozen states that don't allow local government bankruptcies.
