Ind. city moves ahead with cutting down 90 trees

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP): Officials are moving ahead with plans to cut down about 90 trees in a Bloomington park for a new trail despite objections that the removal is excessive.

The Bloomington parks board denied a request Tuesday to change plans for the two-thirds of a mile extension of the pedestrian trail in Cascades Park on the city's north side.

Brian Calvi told the board he understood the importance of paths, but that the project was removing some very large, mature trees.

Parks operations manager Dave Williams says the department worked to limit the number of trees that needed to be removed and that at least 35 new trees will be planted.
