INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Attorneys for a northern Indiana woman found guilty of killing the premature infant she delivered after ingesting abortion-inducing drugs are set to ask a court to throw out her convictions.

Thirty-five-year-old Purvi Patel’s attorneys will urge the Indiana Court of Appeals on Monday to reverse her convictions on charges of feticide and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

The Indiana attorney general’s office will defend the jury’s decision that resulted in Patel’s 20-year prison sentence.

Patel’s attorneys say Indiana’s feticide statute was passed not to prosecute women for their own abortions but to “protect pregnant women from violence” that could harm their developing fetus.

Patel was arrested in July 2013 after she sought medical treatment after delivering a baby boy and putting his body in a trash bin.
