INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The U.S. Department of Education has warned Indiana that it is in danger of losing its federal No Child Left Behind waiver.
Assistant Education Secretary Deborah Delisle told schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz in a letter dated Thursday that federal monitors identified problems in the state's implementation of its existing waiver during a review last year. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter Friday.
The issues identified by Delisle stretch from the administration of former Schools Superintendent Tony Bennett to Ritz's tenure.
Indiana's decision to withdraw from national Common Core education standards means the state will have to file a new waiver request with the federal Department of Education. Lawmakers approved a measure earlier this year making Indiana the first state to withdraw from Common Core.
