PORTLAND, Ind. (AP) _ A northeastern Indiana woman who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty after several horses were found ailing and malnourished on her property has been sentenced to nine months of probation.
Jay County Prosecutor Wes Schemenaur tells WRTV-TV that Karen Barron also was ordered Monday to pay restitution for the care and housing of the horses removed from her property. The Bryant woman had pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty.
Barron was charged after a horse found on her property had to be euthanized. Several other horses were suffering from malnutrition, pneumonia, parasites and skin problems.
Her attorney, Donald Dunnuck, says Barron is a truck driver who entrusted the care of the horses to her son because she “was not home enough'' to care for them.
