Indianapolis Firefighter Hurt in Blaze, Recovering

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Authorities say an Indianapolis firefighter has been removed from a medically induced coma as he recovers from breathing in smoke and super-heated air while inside a burning house last week.

Fire Department officials said Monday that doctors had decided to remove a breathing tube from firefighter Chris McGrone and that he was listed in stable condition.

Capt. Rita Burris says McGrone is able to speak with a raspy voice and is in excellent spirits.

McGrone was placed in a coma so that doctors could monitor his lungs from when his air mask was knocked from his face early Friday.

Burris says McGrone could be released from the hospital on Wednesday, although it is uncertain when he might return to duty.
