Lawmakers Returning for ‘Corrections’ Day

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ State lawmakers are returning to Indianapolis for a day to fix critical mistakes left in the criminal sentencing overhaul legislation approved earlier this year.

The General Assembly plans to meet for a “technical corrections day'' Tuesday. Lawmakers discovered problems with the criminal sentencing bill shortly after they wrapped up their annual session in March.

One measure makes clear the different level felonies for a child sex offense. Another fix would allow police officers to arrest a person accused of theft or shoplifting.

The goal of the corrections day is to approve the series of fixes before the legislation takes effect on July 1.

Lawmakers are also correcting separate legislation that was intended to limit the amount of tax credits available for natural gas vehicles.
