Mom Pleads Not Guilty in Death, Smothering of Kids

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A South Bend woman accused of killing her 11-month-old son and smothering her then-14-month-old daughter has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges.

Twenty-one-year-old Nyesha Crockett also is charged with battery, aggravated battery and neglect.

She asked a magistrate for a public defender Tuesday during an initial court appearance via videoconference at the St. Joseph County Jail, where Crockett is being held without bond. The South Bend Tribune reports she stared without expression as she answered questions from the magistrate.

Police arrested Corbett after Monday's death of 11-month-old Micahyah Crockett. Police say she threw him to ground and kicked him after his father didn't respond to her text messages while out with friends.

Her daughter, Alaiyah Crockett, has been in a vegetative state since being smothered in February.
