N. Indiana Woman Charged With Arson After Suicide Attempt

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A northern Indiana woman has been charged with arson for allegedly causing a house explosion by partially filling the home with gas during a suicide attempt.

Fifty-one-year-old Michelle Ellenberger of Granger is charged with three felony counts of arson resulting in bodily injury and one felony count of criminal mischief stemming from the June 19 blast that injured her daughter, the daughter's boyfriend and a St. Joseph County police officer.

Court documents says investigators believe Ellenberger was trying to kill herself with carbon monoxide and natural gas. When Ellenberger's daughter went to turn off gas coming from a stove, an explosion blew out a kitchen wall and caused the ceiling to collapse.

Ellenberger was arrested Tuesday. Online court records don't list an attorney who might comment on her behalf.
