NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WOWO): The city of New Haven will be saying goodbye to its long time fire chief.

Chief John Bennett is retiring on Aug. 19 after 41 years of service and 16 years as chief, according to the New Haven Fire Department.

On Thursday, Aug. 4, the New Haven/Adams Township Fire and EMS Governing Body appointed Josh Hale as their new fire chief. He’ll start his new role on Aug. 20.

During Bennett’s years of service, he has served in multiple positions. He’s been district chief, a fire prevention officer, a fire marshal and deputy chief. He was appointed to fire chief in July 2000.

“Over the last 41 years, John Bennett has made a positive impact in serving the citizens of New Haven and we thank him for his outstanding professionalism and dedication to the New Haven community,” New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald said.

Bennett said “it has been an honor to serve the community for so many years.”
