North Vernon Couple Could Face Charges in Dog Hoarding Case

NORTH VERNON, Ind. (AP) — Prosecutors are weighing whether to charge a southern <st1:place w_st=”on”>Indiana couple after investigators found nearly 80 dogs in a small home filled with urine and feces.

Jennings <st1:placetype w_st=”on”>County animal control officers discovered 79 dogs living in fetid conditions in a small home in North Vernon last month.

The Republic reports prosecutors are awaiting a report from animal control officers before deciding whether to pursue charges against the couple living in the home.

Officer Heather Kessler says 17 dogs were euthanized because of illness or behavior issues. Five more have died since.

The residents were allowed to keep four dogs on the condition that they be spayed or neutered. They also face weekly animal control visits to ensure their pet population doesn't grow.
