COLUMBUS, OH (WOWO) Ohio is experiencing higher-than-normal flu cases and hospitalizations this season, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
State health officials say a new strain of influenza A, often referred to as the “super flu,” is contributing to the increase. ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said the strain is spreading quickly due to low background immunity in the population.
Last week, the state reported 1,911 flu-related hospitalizations, compared to 1,305 during the same period last year. Vanderhoff said Ohio typically sees an increase in flu activity in early January, with hospitalizations peaking later in the winter.
Health officials say children under the age of 11 and adults over 65 face the highest risk for severe illness. ODH also confirmed Ohio’s first pediatric flu death of the season, involving a teenager from Greene County.
Vanderhoff said the flu vaccine may not be a perfect match for the circulating strain but can still reduce the severity of illness. State health officials continue to recommend vaccination, noting there is still time to get protected during the flu season.
