Ohio State Highway Patrol announces four OVI checkpoints across northwest Ohio

COLUMBUS, OH (WOWO) The Ohio State Highway Patrol is announcing four additional OVI checkpoints scheduled for Saturday across northwest Ohio as part of ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at preventing impaired driving.

The Lead Off

  • Ohio State Highway Patrol will conduct four OVI checkpoints Saturday in northwest Ohio
  • Checkpoints will take place in Defiance, Paulding, Erie, and Huron counties
  • Enforcement efforts will be paired with saturation patrols targeting impaired driving

Checkpoints scheduled across four counties

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the Saturday enforcement effort will include checkpoints in four northwest Ohio counties at the following locations and times:

  • Defiance County: State Route 18 near milepost 26, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Paulding County: U.S. 127 near milepost 12, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Erie County: State Route 4 at Bone Creek Drive, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Huron County: U.S. 250 near milepost 1, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Officials say the checkpoints are part of a broader enforcement strategy funded through federal grant programs.

Part of ongoing enforcement effort

The Saturday checkpoints follow additional OVI enforcement activity earlier in the week across nearby counties, including Hancock, Lucas, and Wood counties.

During those operations, troopers reported hundreds of vehicles checked and multiple enforcement actions, including at least one OVI-related arrest and several traffic stops tied to saturation patrols.

In Lucas County, troopers made contact with 351 drivers during a checkpoint near State Route 2 in Springfield Township and reported one impaired driver identified following diverted vehicles.

In Hancock County, officials said more than 500 vehicles were screened and one OVI arrest was made after diversion from the checkpoint area.

Saturation patrols to run alongside checkpoints

State Patrol officials say each checkpoint will be paired with saturation patrols in surrounding areas.

Those patrols involve additional officers actively looking for impaired driving violations outside of checkpoint zones.

Officials say the combined strategy is intended to increase visibility and deterrence while targeting crashes linked to alcohol or drug impairment.

Safety message to drivers

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to plan ahead if they intend to drink and to arrange for a sober ride home.

Officials say impaired driving remains a leading factor in serious crashes involving injuries and fatalities.

The Takeaway

  • The Ohio State Highway Patrol will conduct four OVI checkpoints Saturday in Defiance, Paulding, Erie, and Huron counties as part of a regional impaired driving enforcement effort.
  • The checkpoints are funded through federal grants and will be supported by saturation patrols targeting additional impaired driving violations in surrounding areas.
  • State officials report recent checkpoint operations have resulted in hundreds of vehicle contacts and multiple enforcement actions, and they continue urging drivers to use sober transportation options.
