Pence Moves Could Help Win Back Conservative Base

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence is taking steps to shore up his conservative base should he run for the White House in 2016.

Pence's 2015 legislative agenda relies heavily on increasing school choice through vouchers and more funding for charter schools. He's also joined a 17-state coalition in a lawsuit over President Barack Obama's executive order on immigration and rejected a federal preschool grant.

The proposals could help smooth over some hard feelings between Pence and the tea party that urged him to run for the White House in 2012.

Those conservatives have been disillusioned with Pence's apparent moderation on Common Core education standards and his silence on same-sex marriage.

Indiana tea party leader Monica Boyer tells The Indianapolis Star Pence's education agenda reminds her of his approach in Congress.
