INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has called for the cancellation of a Bureau of Motor Vehicles contract with a private license branch operator and requested an ethics investigation into a former BMV official.

The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/1gb6qs5 ) the moves come after the BMV official, who allowed Express MVA to charge customers a “convenience fee'' that's since been called into question, took a job with the company.

A Star investigation found that former BMV Chief of Staff Shawn Walters allowed Express MVA to open a private license branch with BMV-issued workstations and access to the agency's computers. The arrangement allowed Express MVA to charge a fee for title and registration work traditionally provided by the BMV.

Pence asked the Indiana inspector general to investigate whether Walters violated an ethics law by going to work for the company.

Walters did not return messages Wednesday seeking comment.
