EDINBURGH, Ind. (AP): Research being done by private companies is bringing more drones to Camp Atterbury's airspace. Reports say nonmilitary research makes up about 20 percent of drone flights at the base. Military officials say that number could rise significantly if the facility is chosen as a national drone test site. Atterbury is competing to become one of six regional drone testing sites for the Federal Aviation Administration. Private companies are developing unmanned aircraft for uses in law enforcement, agriculture and natural resources. Aviation division chief Lieutenant Colonel David Rader says remote crop-dusters or camera drones are likely to make up most drone use in the coming years.
