Projectile bullet strikes woman in head on Fourth of July

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – Fort Wayne police are investigating after a woman was struck in the head by a stray bullet while leaving downtown fireworks celebrations Wednesday night.

An investigation revealed a man and woman were leaving the downtown area in their Jeep, traveling westbound on Rudisill Boulevard near Calhoun Street, when they heard a loud “pop”, according to our partners in news at ABC 21.

The couple first thought a firework had hit the Jeep before realizing the woman, sitting in the passenger seat, was bleeding profusely from the top of her head.

The couple pulled over in a Wendy’s parking lot on Broadway before calling medics.

Police report there was a hole in the top of the Jeep where a projectile bullet went through before striking the woman on her head.

The injured woman was then taken to Lutheran Hospital, where she was released Thursday morning.

Police are still investigating the situation.
