FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — With single-digit temperatures forecast to begin this weekend and last into Monday, residents are being urged to take steps now to protect water meters and pipes from freezing.
Officials recommend keeping garage doors closed if water meters are located in unheated garages and wrapping meters with blankets or towels for extra insulation. Residents with outdoor water meters should also check that meter lids are secure and not broken or missing, as damage could result in costly repairs.
To help prevent freezing, homeowners are advised to run a small trickle of lukewarm water—about the size of a pencil lead—to keep water moving through pipes.
Residents are also encouraged to know the location of their master water shut-off valve so water can be quickly turned off if a pipe bursts.
Taking these precautions can help prevent frozen pipes, property damage, and interruptions to water service during extreme cold weather.
