INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush is encouraging attorneys to consider applying for a vacancy that will be created next year when Justice Brent Dickson retires.

Rush says Indiana has many qualified lawyers who should consider the opportunity. A candidate must be an Indiana resident and a member of the Indiana bar for 10 years or an Indiana judge for five years.

Dickson, the second-longest-serving Indiana justice in history, announced earlier this week that he'll retire next spring before reaching the court's mandatory retirement age of 75.

The seven-member Judicial Nominating Commission will review applications and interview candidates in Indianapolis after the first of the year. After interviews and deliberations in an executive session, the commission will recommend three candidates to Gov. Mike Pence, who will make a selection.
