(WOWO): Hangry exists — and U.S. Sen. Dan Coats is a little angry about it.

Well not exactly that it exists, but that the federal government spent $331,000 of taxpayer money on a study to see if it did.

Every week, Coats gives a speech about federal programs that he believes wastes money called Waste of the Week. This week featured the word “hanger.”

During the beginning of his speech he explains what hanger is — a hungry person who becomes irritable and angry.

The 72-year-old senator did admit a younger staffer had to explain what the word meant.
He said the National Science Foundation was issued a $331,000 grant to study if the emotion was real.

Coats explained the study involved married couples and voodoo dolls.

“This actually happened, folks,” he said. “And the serious part is that the taxpayer paid for it.”
