BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say social media helped connect a 22-year-old man to two armed robberies in Bloomington.

Derrick Newbolt is accused of using a handgun to rob a pharmacy last Monday and a smoke shop last Wednesday. WTHR-TV reports one of the clerks told police he recognized the suspect as a man who uses the nickname “French Gambino.”

Police say they also recognized the alias and knew it belonged to Newbolt. Detectives then began searching for evidence on his social media accounts.

Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters says photos of Newbolt holding the same gun described in the crimes were found on his Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts. Qualters says cellphone records also linked Newbolt to both crimes.

Newbolt was arrested in Castleton on Thursday.
