Southern Indiana Voters Reject $109M School-Funding Plan

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Voters in a southern Indiana county have overwhelmingly rejected a tax increase intended to fund a $109 million plan to upgrade or replace several schools.

The News and Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1l7xb3x ) preliminary election results show 70 percent of Clark County voters opposed the measure that was one of seven local school-funding referendums before Indiana voters on Tuesday. Four of those measures passed.

But Greater Clark County Schools' proposed tax increase generated a voter backlash.

Donna Spence of Greater Clark Taxpayers for Fiscal Responsibility says the school district in the county along the Ohio River sought too large of a tax increase and the proposal “was a big check without a good game plan.''

District Superintendent Andrew Melin says the district is “very disappointed'' by voters' rejection of the referendum.
