INDIANAPOLIS (AP): An Indiana prison spokesman says the state will use a new drug as part of its lethal injection protocol when it next carries out an execution.
 
       Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said the state will use the barbiturate anesthetic Brevital.
 
       A nationwide shortage of thiopental sodium-known by its trademark name Pentathol-has forced states that conduct lethal injection executions to search for alternatives. Brevital is in the same class of drugs as thiopental sodium.
 
       Garrison tells the Post-Tribune that Indiana has a sufficient supply of drugs to carry out an execution, and one may occur this year. There are 13 inmates on the state's death row at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, but none has an execution date.
