INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ State officials are offering a new life insurance benefit for first responders who are not otherwise covered.

The Indiana Public Retirement System announced Wednesday that certain police, fire and emergency medical workers would be eligible for the $150,000 benefit if they are killed in the line of duty, and if their employer signs up. 

Contract medics, police officers employed by non-state schools and firefighters who work for airports are among those who are eligible. 

The additional death benefit is called “Hero's Honor'' and was created by the Legislature in 2015.  Enrollment is open during the month of November.
