INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Statistics show the state of Indiana recorded a decrease in the number of drownings last year compared with 2014.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that there were 54 drownings in 2014. That number fell to 43 drownings last year. So far this year there have been 37 drowning deaths in Indiana. The statistic was as high as 66 drownings in 2011.

Lt. Larry Morrison is an outdoor education coordinator with the department. He attributes the decline to residents “applying good water safety practices.” Authorities urged Indiana residents to continue those practices as the seasons turn to fall and winter and colder water temperatures prevail.
