(FOX NEWS) — Even as tensions flared in the Middle East following U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, President Donald Trump announced Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary three-day ceasefire tied to Victory Day commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump said the ceasefire would include “a suspension of all kinetic activity” and a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each country.
“This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” Trump wrote.
The announcement came hours after Trump defended U.S. retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets as “just a love tap” after Iranian forces targeted three Navy destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Victory Day, celebrated annually in Russia on May 9, commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump wrote. “Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day.”
