Winter Holidays Linked to More Cardiac Deaths

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WOWO) The American Heart Association is issuing a seasonal warning about a rise in cardiac deaths commonly referred to as “holiday heart attacks.” National data show the last week of December has the highest rate of heart-related fatalities each year.

Health experts attribute the spike to several factors, including colder temperatures, increased stress, heavy meals and alcohol consumption, and a tendency to postpone medical care during holiday gatherings and travel. Physicians emphasize that delays in seeking treatment remain one of the most dangerous contributors to fatal outcomes.

Dr. Saura Fortin said recognizing symptoms early and acting quickly is critical. She noted that people often downplay chest discomfort, shortness of breath or dizziness because they don’t want to disrupt holiday plans, which can lead to severe complications.

The American Heart Association is also encouraging the public to learn Hands-Only CPR. The organization notes that most cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals, and immediate CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival.

The AHA advises people to monitor symptoms, avoid excessive eating and drinking, dress appropriately for cold weather, and seek medical help immediately if signs of a heart attack appear.
